Here his own heart cannot but condemn him as a transgressor. To this purport he argues, v. 14 and 23, which two verses explain this, and give us a rule not to act against the dictates. The bowing of the knee to him, and the confession made with the tongue, are but outward expressions of inward adoration and praise. Therefore, whatever we do, we do it to the Lord because Jesus is our Lord (that He might be Lord of both the dead and the living). But whatever we do, we must be able to do it to the Lord, not using conscience as an excuse for obviously sinful behavior. The Old Testament What is Christianity but the serving of Christ? (1-2) Receiving the weaker brother. Our work is to bless the sons of men. The apostle Paul knew the mysteries of the kingdom of God as well as ever any man; yet he confesses himself at a loss; and despairing to find the bottom, he humbly sits down at the brink, and adores the depth. Though men condemn us, it is well enough if our own hearts condemn us not, 1 John 3 21. It is quoted from Isa 45 23. Here the apostle speaks of the distinction of meats and days as a thing indifferent, when it went no further than the opinion and practice of some particular persons, who had been trained up all their days to such observances, and therefore were the more excusable if they with difficulty parted with them. They were not well instructed touching the cancelling of the ceremonial law by the death of Christ, and therefore retained the ceremonial institutions, and practised accordingly; while other Christians that understood themselves better, and knew their Christian liberty, made no such difference. The kingdom of God is not eating and drinking: If we place food and drink before righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, then we are hopelessly out of touch with Gods priorities and His heart. No one who has given up his name to Christ, is allowedly a self-seeker; that is against true Christianity.
